Panic Attacks

A panic attack is a sudden, intense surge of fear or discomfort that often comes without warning and peaks within minutes. During a panic attack, a person may feel overwhelming physical and emotional sensations, making them believe something is seriously wrong, even when there is no real danger. The main difference between anxiety and panic attacks is the intensity and suddenness of the symptoms.

SYMPTOMS

DURATION

Typically lasts between 5 to 20 minutes, though some symptoms can linger for up to an hour

CAUSES

Can be triggered by stress, trauma, certain medical conditions, and substance use, such as caffeine or drugs

RISK FACTORS

May include a lifelong history of violence, substance abuse, mental health conditions, massive life changes, or a family history of panic disorder

TREATMENT

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, breathing and relaxation techniques, exercise and reducing stimulants

Gender is a nuanced and evolving concept. While people with penises are often identified as men and those with vulvas and vaginas as women, this is not always the case. Human experiences are diverse, yet there is a shared humanity that connects us all. Language around gender and anatomy is deeply personal, and care is always provided with respect for each individual’s chosen terms and identity.
